A Guide to Fetishes

Whether they like to admit it or not, most people have a sexual fetish of some sort. These can range from the mild, such as a desire to have sex with the lights on, to the more extreme like having sex in front of lots of people. However, if handled carefully, most fetishes can find their place as part of a normal and healthy sex life.

What is a Fetish?

Sex expert Harlan Mulroy describes a fetish as a “displacement of sexual energy”. Put simply, it means that when a particular image or sensation brings about an orgasm, the mind links the two together. Because an orgasm is such a pleasurable experience, the mind will associate the image or sensation with that feeling and a fetish is born. While fetishes can be perfectly normal, there are those who cannot engage in sex without their fetish being involved. This is when it can become a problem.

Fetishes

For those of us with healthy fetish sex lives, fetishes can take virtually any form. Common fetishes are feet, shoes, leather, cross-dressing, dirty talk, spanking, role play, domination and submission. Because of the levels of pleasure involved, fetishists can go to great lengths to get the most out of their particular fetishes. For example, someone with a fetish for high heels may engage in role-play with a woman wearing high heels. This is a form of substitute for foreplay, and between consenting adults it can be even more exciting than traditional sex.

Fetish without Fear

A major problem for fetishists is finding someone to share their needs with. Often, partners will remain unaware of their other half’s needs or even reject them entirely. In this instance, a fetishist can remain unfulfilled and frustrated for years. However, the Internet has provided a great outlet for many secret fetishists. Not only does it provide anonymity, but its adult chat and webcam sites also offer a safe and anonymous environment through which fetishists can achieve sexual gratification.

Fetishes can be a regular part of the bedroom and, if treated with respect and performed between consenting adults, it’s an exciting way to spice up your sex life.
